THIS PAGE IS PRIMARILY FOR THE BENEFIT OF PROSPECTIVE DESIGN STUDENTS
I had no idea what design school would be like, or what it would take to be admitted to a design program. I suppose the more time passes, the less relevance this information will have, but I hope it is useful to some. I clearly remember not knowing who to turn to for assistance, and I know I would have appreciated such a resource at the time.
1999 AND 2003 - BDES APPLICATION PORTFOLIO(S)
Both of these were rejected. I could have photographed each work individually, but wanted to show how (terribly) the portfolio was formatted. 1999 works show my skill level with little-to-no formal art training.
The four works at the end are representative of my best works from one university-level fundamental art class, and would have been included in the 2003 submission portfolio.
ART 131, FUNDAMENTALS
The basics of line, perspective, proportion, light & shadow, colour theory, etc. These works were created in mid-1999.
DES 374 / 375
This was on the cusp of the digital era, so a lot of analog work was still required. Basically attempting to advance what we learned in art fundamentals, and using that to build a better presentation of design ideas. These works were created in 2003/2004.
2004 - BDES APPLICATION PORTFOLIO
This one was accepted, and with that I was admitted to a university design program. However, most of the works were from classes which were part of the program requirements (and thus, limited to students in the program). I was fortunate enough to get into the classes pre-emptively because my name was placed on a waiting list, and someone had subsequently dropped out. This portfolio was submitted mid-2004.
ART 140, DRAWING
In this class we learned how to work in different styles. These works were created in 2005/2006.
DES 370
The main requirements of this class were to present ideas using traditional sketching, or in most cases, digital means, and then to build prototypes of the designs created. These works were created in 2004/2005.
